Many baseball fans woke up to insane news that the St. Louis Cardinals are currently under FBI investigation. The FBI is reportedly investigating whether officials within the St. Louis Cardinals organization hacked into a Houston Astros database of player information. Who would have thought that the Cardinals, of all teams, would be under investigation?

“Investigators have uncovered evidence that Cardinals officials broke into a network of the Houston Astros that housed special databases the team had built, according to law enforcement officials. Internal discussions about trades, proprietary statistics and scouting reports were compromised, the officials said.”

There was some concern that that former front office official Jeff Luhnow, whom was hired as the Astros General Manager back in 2011, was using a similar computer network that Cardinals had in place. Investigators looked into Luhnow’s passwords in order to find out if he was gaining entrance into the Astros system.

It’s not clear to whom was involved in this hack in the Cardinals Organization. No one is sure if it was ordered by high-rank officials within the organization or it was a brave move by a single employee.

Manager of the Cardinals, Mike Matheny, was unaware of the investigation until this morning.

The Cardinals released a statement, via Bill Raack:

The Cardinals have been one of the most consistent teams in the MLB since 2000. They have been known as a team that plays the game the right way and just simply know how to breed baseball players and win games. They have made the playoffs 11 times since 2000, including four straight from 2011-2014. They also have 2 World Series Titles under their belt since 2000, the first in 2006 and the second in 2011. They currently have the best record in baseball also, 42-21.
