The St. Louis Cardinals obtained relief pitcher Jonathan Broxton from the Milwaukee Brewers for Rookie League outfielder Malik Collymore.
Broxton was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2nd round of the 2002 MLB Draft and made his debut in 2005. He is a 2-time All-Star who was once a premier closer. He had 36 saves and 114 strikeouts in just 76 innings in 2009 for the Dodgers. He has been limited to a set-up role in recent years, only recording 7 saves since 2013.
Broxton has had a difficult this season with the Brewers. He is 1-2 with a 5.89 ERA, but he does have 37 strikeouts in 36.2 innings. One of the things that he has had issues with is home runs, giving up 10.1 per 9 innings.
The Cardinals have already added to their bullpen earlier by getting Steve Cishek from the Miami Marlins. Adding Broxton gives them yet another pitcher who has experience in closing games.
The Cardinals still have the best record in the Major Leagues and they hold a 5.5 game lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cardinals are trying to keep the National League pennant winner pattern going. Since 2010, the San Francisco Giants have won the pennant on the even years and the Cardinals have won on the odd years.
