Saturday afternoon Jon Jones told fans at the gentleman’s expo that is strongly considering testing the waters in the UFC’s heavyweight division within the next year. He says within the next two years he is planning a permanent move to heavyweight. The reigning light heavyweight champion has hinted at wanting to take on the big guys in the heavyweight division for some time now but it looks as if we wont have to wait much longer! He doesn’t want any throwaway fight either, he is looking to take out the top dog at the heavyweight division being the champion Cain Velazquez.

Jon Jones was quoted saying “I think that’s going to happen in the next two years. I’ll   go up to heavyweight, permanently, but I am looking to take a super fight sooner or later within the next year. So yea I am excited for it! I’ve been thinking of me and Cain Velazquez going at it. I think it would be huge for the sport. He is definitely the toughest guy in that division being the champion. He is not that big of a guy so I think it will be a great fight. Don’t be surprised if you see that fight sooner or later.” with Jones looking for a super fight soon and Anderson Silva facing Chris Wideman in a middleweight championship rematch it looks as if the Jones and Velazquez fight is the more probable fight.

Hypothetically if Jones beats Velazquez for the heavyweight title, he would no longer  be able to defend the light heavyweight title which would open that division for a whole new batch of fighters. He is scheduled to fight Glover Teixeira in 2014 for the title. There is also talks of a rematch with Alexander Gustafsson depending on there match outcomes. If everyone stays healthy we may see a huge super fight in the next year or so!
