Here are the results of the MLB Draft from Day 1 (Round 1- Competitive Balance Round B):
1st Round:
- The Houston Astros selected Brady Aiken, left handed pitcher from Cathedral Catholic High School, San Diego, California. Opinion: I think that this was a great pick. He has a great future in the MLB
- The Miami Marlins selected Tyler Kolek, right handed pitcher from Shepard HS (TX). Opinion: I was a little shocked that Kolek wasn’t taken #1 overall. He has the biggest arm in Draft history. Marlins got a great pitcher.
- The Chicago White Sox selected Carlos Rodon, left handed pitcher from North Carolina State. Opinion: Carlos seems like a real professional. He looked like he knew what he was doing in NC State and now we get to see what he can do in the pros
- The Chicago Cubs selected Kyle Schwarber, catcher from Indiana. Opinion: The Cubs must have a lot of faith in this guy. I didn’t see this coming. Still, not a bad pick
- The Minnesota Twins selected Nick Gordon, Shortstop from Olympia HS (FL). Opinion: I heard a lot about him. His brother is Dodgers 2B Dee Gordon and his father is former Major Leaguer Tom Gordon. The Twins were looking for a bat and a shortstop. This pick simply makes sense.
- The Seattle Mariners selected Alex Jackson, outfielder from Rancho Bernaroo HS (CA). Opinion: Why wasn’t this kid taken earlier? This pick works for the M’s because he’s the power guy they need. Expect 25-30 HRs in the bigs from him.
- The Philadelphia Phillies selected Aaron Nola, right handed pitcher from LSU. Opinion: He is believed to be an impact pitcher. He doesn’t have dominating stuff but he’s made up for that. The Phils needed a pitcher and believe Nola is who they need.
- The Colorado Rockies selected Kyle Freeland, left handed pitcher from Evansville. Opinion: loads of emotion from Freeland. He grew up in Colorado, now he pitches for them. He’ll be one of the guys I watch
- The Toronto Blue Jays selected Jeff Hoffman, right handed pitcher from East Carolina. Opinion: This may be a risk. He’s a few weeks off of Tommy John surgery. He was great before that though. It’ll be really interesting to see the result.
- The New York Mets selected Michael Conforto, outfielder from Oregon State. Opinion: He passed up the opportunity to play football in college. I think he would’ve made an impact either way. Nice pick for the Amazin’s
- The Toronto Blue Jays selected Max Pentecost, catcher from Kennsaw State. Opinion: He’s been a great catcher in college. He’s got speed, a little power, and the ability to call a game from behind the plate. Can’t wait to see him in the Bigs.
- The Milwaukee Brewers selected Kodi Medeiros, left handed pitcher from Waiakea HS (HI). Opinion: This kid is the most professional guy I’ve seen in this draft. He has great stuff and blew away the Brewers in the college workouts. I cannot wait to see him in Milwaukee.
- The San Diego Padres selected Trea Turner, shortstop from North Carolina. Opinion: really athletic and speedy. Has a little pop and is a RBI machine. Nice pick.
- The San Francisco Giants selected Tyler Beede, right handed pitcher from Vanderbilt. Opinion: Beede joins an elite class of pitching by joining the Giants. He has a lot of talent and this is a nice pick by the Giants
- The Los Angeles Angels selected Sean Newcomb, left handed pitcher from Hartford. Opinion: I know what this kid possess and I’ll make it real simple. Sean is one of the best pitchers in this class, period.
- The Arizona Diamondbacks selected Touki Toussaint, right handed pitcher from Coral Springs Academy. Opinion: Another professional. He has decent stuff and he has a future in Arizona.
- The Kansas City Royals selected Brandon Finnegan, left handed pitcher from TCU. Opinion: For a team that is projected to finish near the top of the AL Central, I haven’t seen a lot from them as far as pitching. I like this pick because he adds some great pitching to KC.
- The Washington Nationals selected Erick Fedde, right handed pitcher from UNLV. Opinion: Just like Hoffman, Fedde is coming off of Tommy John. He has great control and is a possible #3 starter. Nice pick,
- The Cincinnati Reds selected Nick Howard, right handed pitcher from Virginia. Opinion: One of the best closers in the nation. Add him to the mold with Chapman and the Reds could have one of the best bullpens in the Majors
- The Tampa Bay Rays selected Casey Gillaspie, 1st Baseman from Wichita State. Opinion: He has pop, and you can tell from his numbers from last season. I like it
- The Cleveland Indians selected Bradley Zimmer, outfielder from San Francisco. Opinion: Based from the celebration that was aired, he knew something was up. He has a little pop, speed, field awareness, and he’s the #10 prospect in the draft. Bright future for this kid.
- The Los Angeles Dodgers selected Grant Holmes, right handed pitchers from Conway HS (SC). Opinion: He has a heck of a fastball. I’m surprised he wasn’t taken a bit earlier but it still works out. Nice pick
- The Detroit Tigers selected Derek Hill, outfielder from Elk Grove HS (CA). Opinion: I’m surprised the Tigers went with an outfielder instead of a pitcher, seeing as how they need an arm in the bullpen. But he is one of the best bats in this draft class so all in all, not bad
- The Pittsburgh Pirates selected Cole Tucker, shortstop from Mountain Pointe HS (AZ). Opinion: Has baseballs smarts. He knows his way around a diamond and can play really well. Cole fills the weak spot the Pirates have up the middle. Nice pick
- The Oakland Athletics selected Matt Chapman, 3rd Baseman from Cal State Fullerton. Opinion: He has above average power. He’s an all-around guy and has even pitched in relief. Interesting pick to say the least
- The Boston Red Sox selected Michael Chavis, shortstop from Sparybeery HS (GA), Opinion: Most versatile player in the draft. Boston hopes he can play catcher. Nice pick by the defending champs
- The St. Louis Cardinals selected Luke Weaver, right handed pitcher from Florida State. Opinion: This kid has a huge personality and he struck out a lot of guys last year. Should be a great addition to the Cards rotation.
- The Kansas City Royals selected Foster Griffin, left handed pitcher from The First Academy (FL). Opinion: He had a great season last year, going 7-2. The Royals went with a southpaw earlier in the draft so this makes me think that they’re looking for left handed pitching for their future.
- The Cincinnati Reds selected Alex Blandino, shortstop from Stanford. Opinion: this pick is compensation for Choo. He may be a corner outfielder. His bat took a while to come alive but it did. Nice pick.
- The Texas Rangers selected Luis Ortiz, right handed pitcher from Sanger HS (CA). Opinion: This kid led the U.S to a gold medal in the Under 18 tournament. His fastball gets to the mid-90s and Texas believes that he can deliver
- The Cleveland Indians selected Justus Sheffield, left handed pitcher from Tullahoma HS (TN), Opinion: The Indians are looking to show that they are not a second seed team. Picking Zimmer earlier and now picking Sheffield (no relation to Gary) may help the Indians achieve that goal.
- The Atlanta Braves selected Braxton Davidson, outfielder from T.C Roberson HS (NC). Opinion: Terrific Senior year. He has a great pitching arm too. Nice pick
- The Cleveland Indians selected Michael Kopech, right handed pitcher from Mount Pleasant High School (TX). Opinion: This is an okay pick. Won’t say much but I like it
- The St. Louis Cardinals selected Jack Flaherty, right handed pitcher from Harvard-Westlake HS (CA
Competitive Balance A:
- The Colorado Rockies selected Forest Wall, 2nd Baseman from Orangewood Christian School (FL). Opinion: There’s a lot of love for this guy. Lots of talent, and he even beat Jose Bautista in a HR Derby. Great pick

The Miami Marlins selected Blake Anderson, catcher from West Lauderdale HS (MS). Opinion: This looks to be a gamble for the Marlins. But it’s a nice pick.
- The Houston Astros selected Derek Fisher, outfielder from Virginia. Opinion: Nice left handed bat. He didn’t play in a hitters park so this is interesting pick
- The Cleveland Indians selected Mike Papi, outfielder from Virginia. Opinion: He has some power. Not a huge guy but he’s got enough strength for power numbers
- The Pittsburgh Pirates selected Connor Joe, outfielder from San Diego. Opinion: Doubles machine. Great catcher. Leadoff type guy. Should fit in well
40.The Kansas City Royals Chase Vallot, catcher from St. Thomas More Catholic HS (LA). Opinion: Power guy, although he’s said to be like a Mike Napoli behind the plate. Nice pick - The Milwaukee Brewers selected Jacob Gatewood, shortstop from Clovis HS (CA). Opinion: What a pick to end the Competitive Balance Round A. Crazy Power and baseball junkie. Great pick.
Round 2:
42.The Houston Astros selected AJ Reed 1st baseman from Kentucky. Opinion: The most complete college player in the draft class. Period.
43.The Miami Marlins selected Justin Twine, shortstop from Falls City HS (TX) Opinion: pure and simple, Justin Twine is an athlete through and through
44.The Chicago White Sox selected Spencer Adams, right handed pitcher from White County HS (GA), Opinion: Great addition to the White Sox pitching. Great stuff and great control
45.The Chicago Cubs selected Jake Stinnett, right handed pitcher from Maryland. Opinion: Great stuff. Was drafted a few years ago but decided not to sign. Obviously it was a smart move.
46.The Minnesota Twins selected Nick Burdi, right handed pitcher from Louisville. Opinion: Strictly a closer. One of the best closers in the nation. No better way to say it. Fastball gets up to 102mph
47.The Philadelphia Phillies selected Matt Imof, left handed pitcher from Cal Poly. Opinion: Great strikeout pitcher. Commands the fastball really well.
48.The Colorado Rockies selected Ryan Castellani, right handed pitcher from Brophy Prep (AZ). Opinion: Sinker kind of guy. A little under the radar pick by Colorado. Nice
49.The Toronto Blue Jays selected Sean Reid-Foley, right handed pitcher from Sandalwood HS (FL). Opinion: The experts say this was a surprise that he fell but I disagree. Still a nice place for a power pitcher to land.
50.The Milwaukee Brewers selected Monte Harrison, outfielder from Lee’s Summit West HS (MD). Opinion: This kid is a pure athlete. He has a knack for the game like no other.
51.The San Diego Padres Michael Gettyes, outfielder from Gainesville HS (GA). Opinion: He’s been called “the Mike Trout of the Draft”. Surprised he fell.
52.The San Francisco Giants selected Aramis Garcia, catcher from Florida International. Opinion: Nice pick
53.The Los Angeles Angles selected Joe Gatto, right handed pitcher from St. Augustine Prep (NJ), Opinion: Power fastball. Physically a great pitcher
54.The Arizona Diamondbacks selected Cody Reed, left handed pitcher from Ardmore HS (AL). Opinion: teams are concerned about his weight but he has great stuff
55.The New York Yankees selected Jacob Lindgren, left handed pitcher from Mississippi State. Opinion: Best reliever in the draft. Best pick of the second round.
56.The Kansas City Royals selected Scott Blewett, right handed pitcher fro, Baker HS (NY). Opinion: 94mph fastball. Mid-90s for the other pitches. Great pick
57.The Washington Nationals selected Andrew Suarez, left handed pitcher from Miami. Opinion: he is another player who was drafted in a previous draft but stayed in college. He should help out
58.The Cincinnati Reds selected Taylor Sparks, 3rd baseman from UC Irvine. Opinion: one of the breakout stars. He’s a freak athlete and an offensive monster
59.The Texas Rangers selected Ti’quan Forbes, shortstop from Columbia HS (MS). Opinion: He strikes me more of a defensive guy. But a nice pick
60.The Tampa Bay Rays selected Cameron Varga, Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy (Ohio)
61.The Cleveland Indians select Grant Hockin, right handed pitcher from Damien HS (CA). Opinion: Baseball is in his blood and it shows in the way he plays the game
62.The Los Angeles Dodgers selected Alex Verdugo, outfielder from Sahuaro HS (AZ). Opinion: he’s a pitcher but was drafted as an outfielder. Interesting.
63.The Detroit Tigers selected Spencer Turnbull, right handed pitcher from Alabama. Opinion: Big dude. Dominating fastball. This guy could really improve that struggling Detroit bullpen.
64.The Pittsburgh Pirates selected Mitch Keller, right handed pitcher from Xavier HS (Iowa). Opinion: He’s got some great stuff. He’ll be a great pitcher
65.The Oakland A’s selected Daniel Gossett, right handed pitcher from Clemson. Opinion: strikeout guy. Could be a dominating pitcher down the line.
66.The Atlanta Braves Garrett Fulenchek, right handed pitcher from Howes HS (TX). Opinion: dominate stuff. Great pick
67.The Boston Red Sox selected Sam Travis, 1st baseman from Indiana. Opinion: He’s greedy and shows a lot of power. Fan favorite. Nice pick
68.The St. Louis Cardinals selected Ronnie Williams, right handed pitcher from American Senior HS (FL). Opinion: his fastball gets up to 97mph. This kid has promise
Competitive Balance Round B:
69.The Arizona Diamondbacks selected Marcus Wilson, outfielder from Junipero Serra HS (CA). Opinion: he’s got a little swagger to him, which scouts love. Power guy and great pick.
70.The Arizona Diamondbacks selected Isan Diaz, shortstop from Springfield Central HS (MA). Opinion: below average defender, but is a wizard with the bat. Great swing but sign ability is an issue
71.The St. Louis Cardinals selected Andrew Morales, right handed pitcher from UC Irvine. Opinion: The Cards are looking for pitching, as that’s all they drafted. He looks like a strong pitcher and should do well.
72.The Tampa Bay Rays select Brent Honeywell, right handed pitcher from Walters State CC (TN). Opinion: I like it. He joins a team that knows how to develop young pitching.
73.The Pittsburgh Pirates selected Trey Supak, right handed pitcher from LA Grange HS (TX). Opinion: If you want competitiveness, look for this guy.
74.The Seattle Mariners selected Garreth Morgan, outfielder from Blyth Academy (ON). Opinion: he’s an offensive weapon. He knows how to play and will be a great player down the line
