New York Jets defensive end Sheldon Richardson may find himself lucky if he is able to play a single down for the Jets this season. Already forced to sit out the first 4 games of the upcoming season for a violation of the league’s substance abuse policy, Richardson found his name in the headlines again today when the details of charges he faces following a July 14th traffic stop were released.

The charges named so far include resisting arrest, endangering the welfare of a child, and several traffic charges, including driving at speeds of up to 143 mph.

Richardson was arrested in O’Fallon, Missouri, after police clocked his 2014 Bentley racing at speeds of 122, 135, and 143 mph with another car on I-64. As police attempted to stop the vehicles, Richardson allegedly accelerated to an exit ramp, ran a stop light, and drove with his lights turned off. According to the St. Charles County police report, Richardson lost control of his car at one point, with the back end of the vehicle crossing into the path of oncoming traffic.

When police finally caught up with Richardson after he pulled into a driveway, they discovered that he was driving with 3 passengers – 2 adult males and a 12-year old boy. Police also found a loaded hangun hidden beneath the driver’s side mat and a strong odor of marijuana.

Arraignment is scheduled for October 27th.

The Jets have released a public statement on Thursday afternoon only to state that they have no statement:

“We are aware of the situation and gathering information. This is a pending legal matter and we will have no further comment at this time.”
