Sevilla and Deportivo de La Coruña Put on Seven Goal Frenzy

Sevilla continues to either go big or go home every week in La Liga. Out of the last five games, Sevilla has been able to acquire four points out of the possible 15 points that were available to them. They went from being in fourth place and battling it with Valencia to sitting in fifth place and now being four points behind Valencia, and probably seven if Valencia beats Atlético Madrid on Sunday.

It was a different story for Sevilla when they faced Deportivo la Coruña at the Riazor stadium on Saturday afternoon. Seven goals were scored between the two teams as Sevilla left home with the three points in a 4-3 victory. Vitolo scored twice for Sevilla, while Oriol Riera scored twice for Deportivo.

The first goal came on the 28th minute as the home side broke the silence. Deportivo’s Ivan Calvaleiro gave Riera a super low cross and Riera was able to get it past goalkeeper Beto to give the team a 1-0 lead.

Five minutes later, Sevilla was on the scoreboard thanks to a goal by Vitolo. Vitolo gave a pass to Carlos Bacca inside the box, and Bacca made a 360 turn to find Vitolo right next to him. Vitolo then went through two defenders and got it past Fabricio Agosto to make it 1-1.

The second goal for Sevilla came in the 52nd minute. A beautiful cross from Aleix Vidal saw Vitolo whip one into the bottom corner.

The third goal came on the 64th minute as Sevilla was given a penalty. Pablo Insua brought down Kevin Gameiro and gave Gameiro the opportunity to make it 3-1 as he converted the penalty.

Deportivo saw themselves back in the game in the 72nd minute as Riera scored his second goal of the match. Riera was able to get his goal from close range after meeting an excellent cross from the Portuguese defender Luisinho to make it 3-2.

In the 83rd minute, Sevilla scored their fourth goal of the match as Sidnei turned a goal-bound strike from Vitolo into his own net with the ball bouncing off his right leg.

Just as the game was about to come to an end, Deportivo was awarded a penalty on the 93rd minute. Nicolas Pareja fouled Helder Costa inside the box and gave Deportivo’s Lucas Perez to convert the penalty and make it 4-3 on the 94th minute.

As the third goal came in for Deportivo, there was not enough time for them to secure another goal and at least tie the game as the referee called the game to an end a minute after the penalty shot, letting Sevilla secure the three points. Sevilla’s Vitolo deserves the man of the match for being able to get two goals behind the net and almost get a third but instead was an own goal by Deportivo. Sevilla faces Elche on Sunday and Deportivo faces Valencia on Friday night.
