The city of Detroit, better known as the Motor City or Hockeytown, is reletivey quiet this year in terms of sports. Sure the Tigers acquired Joakim Soria but that’s been about it for Detroit sports news, but the Red Wings are still willing to bring back players and they’ve done just that. It was reported on Monday that the Detroit Red Wings agreed to a 3 year deal with Forward Tomas Tatar. Due to club policy, the financial terms were not disclosed.
Tatar, 23, finished last season, which was also his first season, with 39 points (19-20-39). He played 73 games last year and ranked among the team leaders in Goals (19. Ranked 2nd), Plus/Minus rating (+12. Ranked 3rd), Game Winning Goals (3. Ranked T4th), Shots (158. Ranked 1st), and Shootout Goals (3. Ranked 1st). Tatar represented Slovakia in the Olympic Games in Sochi and tied 2nd in points (1-1-2) with two.
Prior to the 2013-14 season, Tatar was in the AHL affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins. Between 2009-2013, Tatar skated 265 games in a Griffins jersey and won a Calder Cup with them in 2013. In addition to his Olympic debut in 2013-14, Tatar represented his country in 2010, 2012, and 2014 as well as the World Junior Championships in 2009 and 2010. He made his pro hockey debut at the age of 17 with HKM Zvolen, a team in Solvaka’s top league, where he racked up 25 points in 56 games.
