NFL Offseason Update: New York Jets Offense

0

This offseason has lead to a new look New York Jets offense. They have spent time investing in almost all the skill positions on offense this offseason. Their big name acquisitions included a new QB in Michael Vick, a new RB in Chris Johnson, and a new WR in Eric Decker. Last year, their QB was Geno Smith, their RB was Bilal Powell for most of the year, and their top WR was Jeremy Kerley. So this offense has improved at least the relevance of the names of the players on their offense.

The big question with this Jets offense is are their players washed up? Michael Vick last year saw himself lose his starting job to Nick Foles. His former team, the Titans, cut Chris Johnson. And Eric Decker put up a career year last year, but was it only because Manning was behind center?

When it comes to Vick, yes he’s washed up, he’s no longer that stud QB we saw in Atlanta or that won the Comeback Player of the Year Award when he replaced Kevin Kolb. Although he is still a veteran that knows the league and he’s definitely better than Geno Smith, which makes him a decent placeholder unti the Jets can truly find a franchise QB.

Chris Johnson is another guy who has already seen his best days but compared to Bilal Powell he is a huge upgrade. Even with a spotty line in Tennessee he still managed to put up a half decent season (compared to his past achievements). In New York I see him sharing time with the other Jets RB that they signed last year but hardly used, Chris Ivory, but this should be a good one two punch. Ivory will be the power back that loves contact, while Chris Johnson will get you the occasional 50-yard touchdown.

Finally there is Decker; he’s in his prime right now. Playing next to studs like Demaryius Thomas and Wes Welker, he still found a way to have an insane season. Obviously, Michael Vick is not Peyton Manning but Eric Decker was able to put up half decent seasons playing with Tim Tebow, who I might add can’t find a job in the NFL anymore. So I see Eric Decker as their best add because similar to what Vincent Jackson did in Tampa Bay last season, I can see Decker putting up big plays and numbers based off of the huge amount of targets he will be receiving.

With strong additions to these 3 key positions on offense, I see this Jets offense being a fun one to keep up with barring an injury. With the draft, it would be even greater to see them draft a TE like Eric Ebron in the first round followed by a quick receiver like Brandin Cooks in the second round to compliment Eric Decker. Although knowing the Jets defensive minded staff, they’ll probably try to fix the secondary with those picks. Should be a fun offense regardless.
