The Blue Jays have made a move to acquire Troy Tulowitzki and LaTroy Hawkins from the Colorado Rockies for Jose Reyes in a swap of star shortstops. The Rockies will also receive minor leaguers in return.

Tulowitzki was the 7th overall pick by the Rockies in the 2005 MLB Draft. He made his Major League debut in 2006 and has been the starting shortstop for the Rockies since 2007. He is a slick fielding shortstop with a .299 career batting average.

This came as a big surprise to the Rockies’ fans. Tulowitzki has long been a fan favorite, and he had signed a long-term deal. Many fans thought of Tulowitzki as untouchable.

Reyes was signed by the New York Mets in 1999. He has played for the Mets, Miami Marlins, and the Blue Jays in his 13 year career. Reyes suffered a cracked rib earlier this season, but it does not seem to be lingering.

This move will provide an upgrade for the Blue Jays at shortstop, and it gives them a legitimate closer. The Blue Jays will go from a rookie to a 21 year veteran in Hawkins. This will be Hawkins’ 11th team, and he has 126 career saves.

At this point, it is not known who the minor leaguers are, though some speculate that one of them may be pitcher Daniel Norris. Norris made the Top 10 Prospects on The AOSN earlier this month, and it was noted that he would probably find himself pitching for another organization this season.

Reyes is under contract through the 2017 season. Tulowitzki is signed through 2020 with a club option for 2021. Hawkins is a free agent at the end of the season, though it may be his last. He turns 43 in December.
