The Los Angeles Angels get first baseman/third baseman Conor Gillaspie from the Chicago White Sox for cash considerations.
Gillaspie was selected by the San Francisco Giants as the 37th overall pick in the 2008 MLB Draft and made his debut later that year. He had been the White Sox third baseman for the past 3 seasons. With David Freese on the disabled list, and not expected to come back until mid-to-late August, Gillaspie will be starting at third base. May was an especially hot month for Gillaspie at the plate, as he hit .305 for the month. However, he has hit only .241 since June 1.
The Angels are in 2nd place, 2 games behind the Houston Astros in the American League West, but they do hold the first Wild Card spot. They have made a trade for outfielder Shane Victorino and they made another trade to obtain David DeJesus and David Murphy, all part of their bid to make it back to the World Series for the first time in 15 years.
The White Sox were in an awkward position as the trade deadline came and went. They were originally going to be sellers, but after winning 7 of their last 10, they found themselves only 3.5 games out of the second Wild Card spot. Because of this, the only move they made was sending Gillaspie to the Angels.
Gillaspie is arbitration eligible after this season.
