Oscar “Fantasma” Gonzalez, Mexican featherweight, was knocked out in the 10th round over the weekend and died Monday in Mexico of a brain injury.

On Monday, the world of boxing lost yet another fighter. Oscar Gonzalez, a 23 year old Mexican fighter and former WBC Youth World Super Bantamweight Champion, died of a brain injury caused by a knockout in the 10th round against Jesus Galias.

The fight took place in the Scotia Bank Forum in Mexico City. Gonzalez was defending his title against Jesus Galias. Galias controlled the majority of the fight, it wasn’t until the 10th round that the ref stopped the fight after Gonzalez began to have what seemed to be seizures. He was rushed immediately to the hospital and was held in intensive care. Reports say that Gonzalez was there for at least 36 hours before he passed away on Monday.

Gonzalez was slowly rising in his career. His record consisted of 23 victories, 14 via knockout, one loss, and zero draws. He had turned pro in 2007, but sadly his boxing career was cut short. Last year, another Mexican boxer suffered the same fate, Francisco Leal, a 26 year old boxer that died of the same injuries.

It seems like these injuries are becoming more and more frequent. The question is, what can we do to prevent these types of injuries or deaths?

One thing still remains, the fact that Oscar Gonzalez’s life and career was ending way too short. The young Mexican fighter had a full career ahead of him. It is always sad to hear and write about incidents like this in this sport. From everybody here at All Out Sports Network, we would like to send our condolences to his family and may you rest in peace, Oscar Gonzalez.
