Germany has been relegated to the second tier of the European Nations League, as the Netherlands have shocked the French in the last round of group stage matches. The Clockwork Oranje defeated the current world champions with a 2-0 score, helping them secure their spot in the final stage and sending the Germans down to league B.
How It Happened
Germany started the Nations League off on the wrong foot. The 2014 world champs drew in a scoreless match against France back in September. Things did not improve for Die Manschaft in October, losing 3-0 to the Netherlands in Amsterdam. They also came short in their third match of the tournament against France. The German XI lost 2-1 at Stade De France. There is nothing they can do as they now sit at the bottom with a point. With one more match to play against the Netherlands this Monday, the German National Team will be relegated to the second division of European continental football.
What Does This Mean?
For starters, Germany will not play the finals of Group A. Therefore, they will not be able to secure their spot in the Euro 2020 yet. The landscape will be much different for Germany next season. The 2006 World Cup hosts will play against the likes of Slovakia, Northern Ireland, and Sweden next year. While that sounds simple enough, there is one more consequence that could prove deadly for Germany. It is evident that the Germans are not in good shape ever since the last World Cup. Getting relegated from the Nations League could just be another step in the German comedown from glory.
