Another Health Scare

Prior to Friday night’s game in which the Edmonton Oilers hosted the Pittsburgh Penguins, Pascal Dupuis was taken to a hospital as a precaution. At the time, it was unknown as to whether his symptoms were related to his history of blood clots, which he revealed to fans last February in The Players’ Tribune.

When Dupuis wrote about his struggle with blood clots, he admitted that he did not tell anyone, not teammates or family members, about his symptoms at first. Even once he was diagnosed, he kept his health problems to himself. His family and those in the organization who were on a “need to know” basis were the only ones aware of what was happening to him.

Dupuis denied that anything was wrong partly because he was afraid that it might mean the end of his career. He recalled the doctor explaining to him that he ‘basically had a stroke of [his] lung.’ If he had stayed silent longer, or had the clot been near his heart or brain, he would have died. At least, Dupuis is not keeping quiet this time.

Dupuis was released from the hospital that same night. At this time, neither Dupuis nor the Penguins have given any details as to what his symptoms are, but the Penguins have confirmed that his tests came back negative for blood clots. He did not play in Saturday night’s game against the Calgary Flames, as he traveled back to Pittsburgh for further testing. It is unclear, as to when Dupuis may return to the ice.
