5 Run 7th Carries Royal to 2-0 ALCS Lead

Toronto Blue Jays at Kansas City Royals

After defeating the Blue Jays in game 1, the Kansas City Royals looked to take a 2-0 lead going into Toronto with hopes of ending the series there. The Royals would do exactly that, defeating the Blue Jays by a final score of 6-3.

On the mound for the Royals would be Yordano Ventura. Ventura pitched well today, going 5.1 innings, allowing 3 earned runs on 8 hits, but ultimately getting the no decision on the day.

The Blue Jays would call on trade deadline acquiree David Price. Despite starting the game hot, Price could not get out of the seventh inning. He pitched 6.2 innings, allowing 5 runs (all in the 7th inning) on 6 hits, ultimately getting the loss on the day.

In the second, the Blue Jays would be the first to threaten to score. Following an Edwin Encarnacion single, Chris Colabello would move him to second. The inning would later end on a Russell Martin double play.

The Blue Jays would be the first to strike, scoring in the the top of the third. Following a Kevin Pillar double, Ryan Goins would double as well, scoring Pillar and giving the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead.

In the sixth inning, the Blue Jays would extend their lead on a Encarnacion single, which scored Josh Donaldson, giving the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead. Troy Tulowitzki would double later in the inning, scoring Jose Bautista, extending the Blue Jays lead to 3 runs.

In the seventh inning, the bats finally got hot for the Royals, creating a runfest for the Royals. Eric Hosmer would be the first to drive in a run, driving in Ben Zobrist. With the next at bat, Kendrys Morales would ground out, scoring Lorenzo Cain, cutting the Blue Jays lead to one run. The Royals would go on to score 5 runs in the inning, giving the Royals a 5-3 lead.

In the eighth inning, the Royals would tack on another run on a Mike Moustakas single, which scored Hosmer and moved Morales to third. Mark Lowe would come in and force Salvador Perez to strike out, ending the inning.

Wade Davis would come in for the ninth, and would get out of the ninth, allowing just one hit. Wade Davis has yet to allow a run in 5 innings pitched this postseason.

Moustakas drove in Hosmer in the seventh to tie the game, then scored on an Alex Gordon double to give the Royals the lead. In the eighth inning, Moustakas drove in Hosmer again for an insurance run He ended up going 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Game 3 (Royals lead 2-0)

The series shifts to Toronto for Game 3 on Monday at 8 pm. The Royals are going with Johnny Cueto against Marcus Stroman of the Blue Jays. Cueto is coming off a marvelous performance in Game 5 against the Houston Astros, retiring the last 19 batters that he faced. Stroman also pitched well in the Blue Jays’ Game 5 against the Texas Rangers, going six innings and allowing only two runs.
