The 2019 Mets season has been night and day. They have come from second to last place in the NL East to being one and a half games away from a Wild Card spot. The Queens’ team has the best record for the month of August in the entire league. Their 15-7 record for the month and 27-12 mark during the second half makes it clear that something has indeed changed.
Men On A Mission
Two names come to mind when talking about the Mets’ hot month: Pete Alonso and J.D. Davis. Alonso used to be a one-man show earlier in the season; now he’s a core member of a team eager for a postseason spot. “Polar Bear”, as he went by during the Players’ Weekend, sits 3rd in the NL in home runs (40). He’s 7th in RBI with 97, and his OPS isn’t bad either at .959.
Davis, on the other hand, wasn’t as hot of a prospect as Alonso. As a matter of fact, he was brought to the Mets with few expectations. He changed that in a heartbeat. He has been good ever since arriving to New York, but he has gone on a tear this month. The former Astro is hitting .295 with 15 RBI and an .898 OPS. He has turned into a strong clubhouse presence as well.
deGrom Makes A Difference
Pitching has been almost unrecognizable from the beginning of the season. Noah Syndergaard had a rough first half as poor performance and injuries hindered his play. He has bounced back nicely and looks like a new pitcher late in the season. His ERA has gone from 4.68 to 1.32. He has allowed 11 runs and given up just one homer.
Embed from Getty ImagesThor is doing well, but Jacob deGrom is doing even better. In August alone, he has struck out a total of 33 batters. He has allowed just 9 runs and a single home run. His recent hot form was more than evident during the Players’ Weekend as he struck out 13 Braves at home.
Can The Mets Keep Up?
The Mets are good at going with the flow. We’ve seen it over the past couple of seasons. When they fall, they fall hard. New York now has a shot at using their momentum for good once and for all. Getting into the Wild Card Game is 0up to them as they will face other contending teams over the coming weeks. Sink or swim Mets, don’t screw this up.
