Monday NHL One-Liners

What a wild weekend for the NHL. We saw what could be the goal of the year, plus a few saves that really make you question how did they do that?

On top of all the wild plays, Buffalo took both games of their home-and-home against Montreal. Calgary posted back to back shutouts over San Jose and Arizona, on the road. All while the Islanders, Blackhawks, and Predators continue to stay red-hot (8-2-0 in last 10 games).

Here’s a few tidbits to keep in mind heading into this week.

  • Tyler Ennis may have scored the goal of the year Friday night against Carey Price and the Montreal Canadiens.

  • Not to be out done, Cam Ward made up for the goalies by making the save of the weekend for sure.

  • New Jersey Devils signed veteran center Scott Gomez to a two-way contract Monday for $550,000. In 14 NHL seasons with the Devils, New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens, San Jose Sharks and Panthers, Gomez has 173 goals and 713 points in 987 games.

  • Karri Ramo had a weekend for the Calgary Flames. Ramo made 58 saves in his two shutouts over San Jose and Arizona. He has a 6-2-1 record with a 2.28 goals-against average and .919 save percentage in 10 appearances this season.

  • Canada announced its World Junior Championship camp roster, and it’s loaded with top young talent. 21 clubs have at least one prospect on the roster. The roster lead by Connor McDavid, Lawson Crouse, Zachary Fucale, Sam Reinhart, and Nicholas Baptiste.

  • All-Star voting has taken an odd turn, as Sabres forward Zemgus Girgensons leads the league in votes. Backed by his homeland of Latvia, the country has flooded the polls to put “The Latvian Locomotive” at the top for the charts. “The fans back home in Latvia are kind of crazy, all about hockey. Stay up late, wake up early, watch the games” Girgensons said.

  • Columbus Blue Jackets center Artem Anisimov will miss two to three months because of torn triceps. The injury plagued Blue Jackets will now have 3/4 opening night centers on the bench, not something coach Todd Richards had in mind. Richards said, “You lose three penalty killers, guys who you really rely on; three guys on faceoffs.”

  • Chicago survived its annual “Circus Trip”. Each year the Circus takes over the United Center and force the Blackhawks and Bulls on the road for two weeks. The Blackhawks stood up to the task this year, going 5-1-0. The only loss came against Pacific leader Vancouver.

  • Detroit had some electrical issues at the aging Joe Louis Arena, causing half of the arena to lose lighting prior to the puck drop. They were able to get things started in around a half hour, and picked up the win 5-3 over Vancouver.
