McCarthy Gone In Green Bay

Packers Fire Long Time Head Coach

The fate of NFL coaches can be determined by one Janet Jackson lyric, “what have you done for me lately?” It’s all about the here and now. Past accolades only matter for so long and then you have to produce. Packers Coach Mike McCarthy found this out the hard way. Although McCarthy brought a title to Green Bay success has been few and far between since then. So it is no surprise the Packers have decided to part ways.

A Long Time Coming

The dismissal of McCarthy was something football fans have seen on the horizon for a while now. Since winning a Super Bowl in 201, the Packers have not done much of anything. Furthermore, McCarthy has pretty much squandered the talents of star QB Aaron Rodgers. Since winning it all the Packers have only two playoff wins. What’s worse is their abysmal play when Rodgers isn’t under center. When Rodgers is unavailable, McCarthy is exposed offensively. They struggle to score and their season is all but over immediately. Therefore, as they continued to come up short, it is no wonder McCarthy was sent packing.

How It Finally Ended

McCarthy’s last stand with Green Bay came at home against the lowly Arizoa Cardinals. The Packers, once again, struggled on offense and were unable to capitalize on home field advantage against an inferior opponent. Green Bay’s defense, which it seems McCarthy refuses to address, gave up an early lead and looked lost against a rookie quarterback. By the end of this tilt, enough was enough for the Packers front office. As Mason Crosby’s kick sailed wide it took with it his coach’s job.

Where Everyone Goes From Here

With 12 years of experience and a Lombardi Trophy to his credit, McCarthy will not be unemployed for long. He will probably be picked up by a team in need of an offensive mind. Cleveland immediately comes to mind as a potential landing spot. As far as Green Bay is concerned, they still have a future Hall of Famer under center. So with the right pieces the Packers could be together once again.
