The New York Mets hired Carlos Beltran as their new manager. They did so after a lackluster 77-85 season led by Mickey Callaway. New York has filled another hole in their payroll, and they did so with a man that has absolutely no experience at the job. It all sounds pretty familiar, doesn’t it?
Get To Work And May God Help You
Beltran will get to work with nothing but the support of the Met faithful. He bonded with them after playing with the Metropolitans for seven seasons. He will sit there in the dugout with nothing but the love and appreciation of Citi Field. That’s perfectly fine if you ask GM Brodie Van Wagenen, as the work requirements for the job are minimal.
According to Brodie, Beltran has “experience”. He has a little bit more than that to be exact, he has “life experience”. That seems easy enough to have. I have experience, I should have applied for the job. Our entire writing staff could have applied for the position. We could have managed the Mets for goodness sake. To make matters worse, they had a much better option right in front of them and they let it get away.
Eduardo Perez was more than fit for the job. The decision to not hire him only makes New York look more incompetent. He never played for the Mets, but he has devoted his life to baseball after retiring in 2006. Perez has worked as an analyst for both ESPN and ESPN Deportes. He has managed in Puerto Rico, was a consultant for the Cleveland Indians, and served as hitting coach to the Miami Marlins. Just like Carlos, he speaks English and Spanish fluently.
Beltran isn’t ready for the job, there’s no doubt about that. But, is he at least brave enough?
The Thin Line Between Bravery And Stupidity
Carlos Beltran just agreed to work one of the toughest gigs in baseball, I’ll give him credit for that, but that’s as good as it’ll get from me. He’ll manage a team and I’m sure he’ll do it to the best of his abilities. Nonetheless, there’s no way he’s coming out of Queens intact by the end of the season.
The Puerto Rico native has no clue how to deal with a team day in and day out. He has no idea how to deal with injuries or with a pitching staff that has the consistency of warm jello. Nor does he have the patience to deal with an impatient man like the GM who hired him.
I’d like to say you’re brave enough for taking the job Carlos, but in reality, you were just stupid enough to not pass on it.
Brace For Impact New York
This is just more of the same. This is the exact same kind of move that brought Brodie van Wagenen to Citi Field. So far, other than calling up Pete Alonso, his job has been borderline shameful. The same thing will happen to their new manager. Only he won’t get to keep his job by the end of the season.
This will fail. You will have to find yourself a new manager in 2021, if not sooner, and Mr. Met will have yet another person to flip his finger at.
