Suarez Leads Uruguay to Victory, England Likely Eliminated

Uruguay faced England in the second round of group matches for Group D.  Both sides came hungry for the 3 points as they both lost their first matches. Uruguay comes from a 3-1 loss against Costa Rica while England comes from a 2-1 loss against Italy.

Both teams began pressuring trying to get the first goal. The first yellow card of the match went to Uruguay’s Diego Godin on the 9th minute for a handball just outside the box. Rooney took the free kick and shot it to the left side of the goal leaving the Fernando Muslera standing. The shot was good but it wasn’t good enough to go in the goal. Christian Rodriguez ca close to scoring on the 15th minute with a power shot from outside the box to send it just over the goal post.

Rooney came close to scoring on the 32nd minute when he received a beautiful cross from a corner kick. A point blank header straight to the crossbar denied Rooney of his goal. Luis Suarez netted the first goal of the match on the 39th minute as he headers in a cross sent in by Edison Cavani.

Suarez had a great first half even though he received knee surgery right before the tournament started. Sturridge came close to scoring on the 40th minute but his shot was blocked by Muslera. Uruguay finished the first half with a 1-0 lead over England.

Rooney had a close chance to score on 53rd minute but was denied once again my Muslera. Alvaro Pereira was rocked on the 60th minute when Sterling’s knee collided with his head. He stayed on the ground conscious but not well. The medical team signaled the Uruguay coach to replace him but he said he was good to play. England managed to maintain a huge percent of the possession but what does that matter if you can’t finish and score some goals.

Ross Barkley replaced Raheem Sterling on the 64th minute. The first substitution for Uruguay had Christian Stuani replacing Nicolas Lodeiro on the 67th minute. Steven Gerrard received the first yellow card for England for this match on the 68th minute.  Adam Lallana came on for Danny Welbeck on the 71st minute. Wayne Rooney scored his first world cup goal on the 75thminute from a low cross from Glen Johnson.

It only took him 28 world cup appearances for him to net his first world cup goal. Jorge Fucile came on in the 78th minute to replace Alvaro Gonzalez in the midfield.

Luis Suarez netted the winning goal on the 84th minute with power shot to the second post.

Rickie Lambert came on for Jordan Henderson on the 87th minute. Luis Suarez was subbed of on the 89th minute to prevent further injury. Sebastian Coates came on for him to try to provide more defensive help for Uruguay to prevent England from scoring another equalizer. Suarez was the savior for Uruguay as his 2 goals kept Uruguay’s hopes to make it out of the group stage alive. Group D has an all-out battle to see who will make it out of the group stage. It is only a matter on how each team performs on their third match of the group stage and on the result of Italy vs Costa Rica. Who will make it out of Group D?
