Diego Simeone’s men seem to be on the road to the Champions League next season with today’s win over David Moyes’ Real Sociedad. It was not the best of games for Real Sociedad as they fell 2-0 and saw former member Antoine Griezmann score against the club as well.

Atletico Madrid has been able of find the form they had in the beginning of the season and now sit in third place after the victory. Although Valencia is one game behind, Atletico is four points ahead of Valencia and can continue to be in the top three if they continue the solid play. Griezmann was able to net his 16th goal of the season, getting him much closer to third place on the La Liga scoring sheet.

It was not a great game for Moyes’ men as an own goal by Mikel Gonzalez opened up the scoring for Atletico Madrid. Koke was involved in the play as he crossed in a ball from a corner kick and as it came into the danger zone, the ball bounced of Gonzalez’s head and past goalkeeper Gernomio Rulli to make it a 1-0 two minutes into the first half.

About eight minutes later, Griezmann made it a 2-0 game. Koke was involved in the play once again as he was able to have an open shot for goal but his chance was quickly blocked by Rulli. Griezmann, though, was there to recover the rebound and get it past his former teammate. Even though players came to celebrate with the Frenchman, Griezmann stayed calm to show respect to his former team.

Both teams had a few more opportunities but the effort was not enough and it stayed 2-0. This gets Atletico Madrid much closer to a Champions League spot next season. With only eight games left in the season, Atletico hopes to continue its great form when they face seventh place Malaga on Saturday. As for Real Sociedad, it seems like the absence of Mexican striker, Carlos Vela, is really hurting them and sit in tenth place with only 37 points and will face Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday with hopes of getting three points.

The man of the match goes out to Koke who was able to contribute in both goals and continues to be in great form for Simeone’s side.
